What is Pityriasis Rosea?
Pityriasis Rosea is a skin condition characterised by a large, slightly raised pink or red patch on the skin, also called a herald patch. This patch is usually the first sign and is quite noticeable. A week or two later, smaller patches may form on the chest, back, abdomen or neck, following skin lines in a Christmas tree pattern - hence the name Christmas tree Pityriasis Rosea.
This condition affects the majority of people aged 10 to 35 years old and isn't contagious, so you can't catch it from anybody else. The causes of Pityriasis Rosea are not completely understood but it is believed to be caused by a viral infection. The symptoms include mild itching and the appearance of rash.
Pityriasis Rosea generally resolves without treatment within 6 to 8 weeks, but managing symptoms such as itchiness can help ease the discomfort during that time. In case the rash continues or you experience severe symptoms, it's important to see a certified doctor.
Common Causes of Pityriasis Rosea
Pityriasis Rosea is a skin condition that often comes up without a specific cause. Some possible causes that have been identified by observation and research are listed below:
Viral Infections: The most accepted theory is that Pityriasis Rosea is caused by a viral infection. Particularly, herpes virus 6 and 7, which also bring about many other viral symptoms, are associated with the onset of this ailment.
Immune System Response: Some experts suggest that Pityriasis Rosea may result from an immune system response to an infection or a stressor. This may explain why the rash sometimes develops following a cold or other respiratory infection.
Predisposition to Genetics: There may be a genetic component, as a family history of Pityriasis Rosea increases the risk of developing it yourself.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy, have been associated with Pityriasis Rosea and may contribute to the rash initiation.
Environmental Factors: Seasonal changes (spring and autumn) are considered triggers because humidity and temperature changes and affect skin health.
Stress: Emotional or physical stress also may cause Pityriasis Rosea, possibly due to immune function and hormonal balance.
Signs and Symptoms of Pityriasis Rosea
Pityriasis Rosea is a skin condition that often starts subtly before becoming more noticeable. It's characterised by a distinctive rash that usually follows a specific pattern, making it recognisable to those familiar with the condition. Here are the common signs and symptoms to watch out for if you suspect you might have Pityriasis Rosea.
Symptoms
Herald Patch
This is usually the first sign of Pityriasis Rosea. It’s a large, round, or oval pink or red patch that appears on the skin. It's often mistaken for ringworm due to its shape and can be up to several inches across.
Christmas Tree Pattern
After the appearance of the herald patch, smaller patches typically begin to spread across the back, chest, and abdomen in a pattern that resembles the branches of a Christmas tree, hence the name Christmas tree Pityriasis Rosea.
Mild to Moderate Itching
Many people with Pityriasis Rosea experience itching, which can range from mild to quite bothersome. The degree of itchiness can vary widely from one person to another.
Scaling Patches
As the rash develops, the patches may start to flake or scale. This scaling is usually mild but can be more noticeable in some areas.
Symmetrical Rash
The rash often appears symmetrical on both sides of the body and is more common on the trunk than on the limbs.
Additional Symptoms
While less common, some people might experience tiredness, a slight fever, a sore throat, or a headache when they first develop Pityriasis Rosea.
Do you have any of the following symptoms?
- A large, round, or oval pink or red patch on the skin
- Smaller patches in the back, chest, or abdomen resembling a Christmas tree
- An itchy sensation that is sometimes very intense
- Flaky or scaly skin on the patches
- Rash appearing similarly on both sides of the body
- Feeling unusually tired or fatigued without a clear reason
- A slight fever that accompanies the onset of the rash.
- A sore throat around the time the rash appears.
