What is Dermatitis?
Dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes inflammation, making the skin red, itchy, and sometimes swollen. In most cases, this is triggered due to various environmental triggers or even due to your genes. The term "Dermatitis" covers several types of skin irritations, which have different symptoms and causes.
The 2 major players in Dermatitis are Atopic Dermatitis (commonly called eczema) and Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis is more about your body's internal reactions, possibly related to allergies or your genes. It often begins in childhood and may remain through adulthood or go away over time. Contact Dermatitis, on the other hand, occurs whenever your skin doesn’t agree with something you touch such as certain chemicals in jewellery items or soaps.
Dermatitis can be quite annoying and uncomfortable but the condition is not contagious, meaning you can not catch it from someone, or pass it on to others. The Ayurvedic treatment for Dermatitis usually involves avoiding the main causes or triggers of this condition and using herbs that moisturise and keep the skin moist, and soothe inflammation. Knowing what irritates your skin and how to care for it can help you manage Dermatitis.
Common Causes of Dermatitis
Dermatitis could flare up for multiple reasons, which are generally associated with the type of Dermatitis you have. Knowing these triggers helps you manage symptoms and keep your skin healthy.
The most common causes of Dermatitis include:
Allergens: Common allergens for Dermatitis are pollen, dog dander and dust mites. This is more about your immune system attacking substances that it mistakenly considers harmful.
Irritants: Basic household substances such as soaps, detergents, disinfectants and shampoos may result in Contact Dermatitis. Even very brief contact with a chemical can irritate the skin.
Genetics: A family history of eczema, asthma or allergies may also raise your risk of Dermatitis, especially with Atopic Dermatitis.
Environmental Factors: Extreme weather like very cold or dry weather can dry out your skin and cause flare ups. Likewise, humid weather can worsen some kinds of Dermatitis.
Stress: Emotional stress does not cause Dermatitis directly but can cause a flare up or worsen the issue.
Food Allergies: In some Atopic Dermatitis patients, dairy, nuts, soy and wheat can trigger Dermatitis symptoms.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly in females during pregnancy or during the menstruation cycle, can lead to Dermatitis.
Skin Infections: Inflammation from bacterial, viral or fungal infections of the skin can also intensify the signs of Dermatitis.
Signs and Symptoms of Dermatitis
Dermatitis includes several types of skin inflammation with different symptoms and signs. Each kind of Dermatitis might not show all these symptoms and could vary in severity from mild to serious. These symptoms can impact comfort and quality of life and must be recognised early. Knowing these signs might prompt quick action, including consultation with an Ayurvedic expert to manage the condition.
The signs and symptoms which might suggest Dermatitis are:
Symptoms
Itching
Itching is among the most common symptoms of Dermatitis, often severe and persistent, which makes you want to scratch the area constantly.
Redness
The skin might be more red than usual because of inflammation.
Dry Skin
Affected areas may be very dry and sometimes flaky with cracks in the skin.
Rashes
Rashes can appear in any size and show up anywhere on the body depending on the type of Dermatitis.
Blisters
Sometimes, small fluid-filled blisters may form that ooze and crust over if scratched.
Swelling
Inflammation may puff up certain areas of skin.
Burning Sensation
Some people feel a burning sensation on the affected skin.
Cracking
Extreme dryness can cause the skin to crack around joints such as elbows and knees.
Thickened Skin
The skin can become thick and leathery from Chronic Dermatitis (lichenification).
Pain
It can be quite hurtful when the skin cracks or blisters burst.
