What is child asthma?
Child asthma (a variant of Asthma noted in children) is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways in the lung. These airways are responsible for bringing air into and out of the lungs, which become swollen and lead to the production of excess mucus, thereby forcing breathing to become labored.
This condition often causes wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and even shortness of breath in children. Child Asthma can significantly affect any child's daily life activities, sleeping patterns, schooling, and quality of living. This is one of the most common chronic illnesses for children worldwide, with millions of children infected.
Symptoms
Cough
Chest pain
Tightness in breathing
Wheezing
Shortness of breath
Causes of Asthma in Children
According to Ayurveda, asthma is a condition caused by an imbalance of the doshas ‘Kapha’ and ‘Vata’. It can be aggravated by cold air, eating cold foods or stale food, dust and pollutants in the environment. It has been linked with a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. These asthma attacks can be triggered by allergens, air pollution, respiratory viral infections and change in weather conditions.
Risks & Complications
There are several possible complications associated with child asthma if not properly managed such as:
- Severe asthma attacks that may require emergency treatment
- Delayed growth or puberty in children
- A fatigue that could influence normal activities and school performance
- Infections of the lungs and other breathing problems
When to See a Doctor?
It's crucial to consult a healthcare provider if your child:
- He/She has persistent problems or attacks quite often
He/She has to use inhaler more often than what is advisable
He/Sh has apparent difficulty in growing or in being active because of asthma
