What is Carbuncle?
A Carbuncle is a serious skin infection which happens when several hair follicles become infected at once leading to a group of painful boils. These boils are pus-filled bumps underneath the skin caused by bacteria, usually Staphylococcus aureus. Carbuncles are larger and more severe than single boils, appearing red, swollen and sore to touch. They develop on parts of the body with thicker hair like the back of the neck or the thighs but may also develop at other places like the buttocks or armpits, especially where skin rubs together or sweats a lot.
When comparing Carbuncle vs boil, a simple boil infects just one hair follicle, while a Carbuncle affects a larger area and has several pockets of pus that must drain before the infection can heal. This makes them especially painful and raises the likelihood of spreading the infection to other regions of the skin or other individuals. Carbuncles can also leave scars due to their size and depth.
If you notice a red, tender lump on your skin, it may be a Carbuncle. Proper diagnosis and medical treatment is essential to avoid any further complications of this condition.
Common Causes of Carbuncle
Carbuncles can be annoying, showing up unexpectedly and causing considerable discomfort. Certain factors increase the risk of these painful clusters of boils. Knowing what causes Carbuncles can help you avoid them and find timely treatment.
The most common causes of Carbuncle are:
Bacterial Infections: Carbuncles are caused mainly by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. This common bacteria lives on skin and inside the nose, and invades the body through tiny cuts or hair follicles causing serious infections under the skin.
Bad Hygiene: Not cleaning the skin regularly can promote bacterial growth, especially in areas of sweat and dirt accumulation. Preventing infections such as Carbuncles requires regular washing and good skin care.
Friction & Irritation: Close fitting clothes or something that rubs against the skin can cause irritation of the hair follicles and make them more susceptible to infections, leading to Carbuncles.
Compromised Immune System: Weak immune systems, caused by chronic ailments including diabetes or kidney disease or by immunosuppressive medicines, are more prone to Carbuncles.
Living in Close Quarters: Individuals residing in crowded places like dormitories or military barracks are at an increased risk as bacteria can spread more quickly among such individuals.
Signs and Symptoms of Carbuncle
Dealing with Carbuncles can be both painful and frustrating. Recognising the early signs and symptoms of this skin condition is vital for prompt treatment and preventing its spread.
The most noticeable symptoms of Carbuncle are:
Symptoms
Multiple Boils
A Carbuncle is a bunch of tiny red bumps which appear to be pimples or insect bites. These bumps are close together and can quickly become large, pus-filled boils.
Pain & Tenderness
The area around a Carbuncle is usually very painful and sore. The pain may become worse as the infection grows and the boils grow in size.
Swelling & Redness
You'll notice more swelling and redness as the infection grows. The afflicted area may be warm and inflamed as the body fights the bacterial infection.
Pus/Fluid Discharge
When mature and starting to drain, Carbuncles may release pus or a clear fluid. This particular discharge may be white, yellow or green in colour.
Spreading Infection
In case it is not treated correctly, the infection could spread to adjacent skin parts or further into the body causing more substantial skin damage.
Fever/Fatigue
In more severe cases, a Carbuncle can cause systemic symptoms like fever and a general feeling of being unwell . These signs suggest that the infection is not just restricted to the skin.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Local lymph nodes can become sensitive and swollen, particularly in the neck, armpits, or pelvic area as the immune system attacks the infection.
Do you have any of the following symptoms?
- Multiple boils or clusters of red bumps that are close together
- Pain and tenderness in the affected area
- Swelling and redness around the boils
- Pus or clear fluid discharging from the boils
- Spreading of the infection to surrounding skin
- Fever or a general feeling of being unwell
- Swollen lymph nodes near the affected area (neck, armpits, or pelvic area)
- Increased warmth around the affected skin
